The weather balloon tugged hard against its moorings as Jackson fixed the equipment onto it. He was quick, but not rushed. He loved a field trip, and between the launch of the balloon and the assessment of the data there was a long afternoon’s fishing ahead.

Once the rig was secured to the line he tested each piece of machinery to make sure it was still functioning and that no batteries had gone flat. Then he fixed the small dispersal unit underneath, set to release the wind-seed trackers once the balloon had reached the specified height. There was a storm system coming up over the panhandle which, if the mapping system was correct, ought to ride out all the way to the east coast, taking in Philadelphia, New York, even Washington on the way. When the survey was done he could post the severe weather warnings to the TV stations.

Finally he took the vial of trackers out of his pocket and fitted it into the dispersal clamp. lts contents surged up into clouds of distant and tiny turbulence through the dark glass.

He slipped the anchor and watched the balloon rise. Quickly it became a white blob, diminishing all the time, until, shielding his eyes against the glare of the noon sky, he could see first a thing the size of a dinner plate, then a dot and then nothing at all.

He packed up his equipment into the back of the van and began to drive north, towards the cabin where his fishing gear was waiting next to a picnic basket and a bottle of Merlot.
